A Rapper and Producer, Travis Scott has now released his much anticipated 5th studio album by the name "Utopia", on July 28, 2023. The album is the follow-up to his 2018 critically acclaimed and commercially successful "Astroworld", which earned him three Grammy nominations and a Billboard 200 number one debut. "Utopia" is a 19-track album that features a star-studded lineup of guest appearances from artists such as Drake, The Weeknd, Beyoncé, Kid Cudi, Future, SZA, Young Thug, 21 Savage, and more.
The album also showcases Scott's signature psychedelic trap sound, with influences from rock, pop, R&B, and electronic music. The album was first teased by Scott on his Instagram post on July 8, 2020, with a simple caption that read "Utopia". Since then, he has dropped hints about the album on various occasions, such as his tweet on August 3, 2020, that said "See you in Utopia", his single "Franchise" that featured the phrase "Live From Utopia" on its cover art, and his letter to his DJs that ended with "See you in 2021 in Utopia".
Moreover, this enthusiastic Rapper surprised his fans by making and delivering them custom-made Utopia chains, as he carried around a Utopia briefcase that was handcuffed to his bodyguard's wrist. His psychedelic rock sound choice was inspired by Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. In August 2021, he signed a production deal with A24, to create a film adaptation of Utopia.
Delay to the album came when on
November 5, 2021, his performance at Astroword Festival, where eight among the
audience were crushed to death while hundreds of others received serious
injuries, Scott faced grave backlash from the public due to his alleged
negligence. Though, he tried being sympathetic towards the aggrieved families
by paying funeral costs, he clearly stated that he cannot be held responsible
for this tragedy. Months later, he released his delayed album, Utopia, on July
4, 202gia3 with a tweet:
"Happy Birthday America. Utopia. July 28"
His album cover art, which depicted him standing in front of a futuristic cityscape with a giant butterfly in the sky, was all but a simple message to the world. This cover was designed by an artist named, Hajime Sorayama, who is well renowned for his erotic and robotic cover arts. On July 26, 2023, a performance of songs from Utopia at a concert in Pyramids of Giza was cancelled due to prevailing security issues in the area. He then premiered his album on Apple Music's Beats 1 radio station at midnight EST on July 28. His fans ardently praised Scott's creativity, and futuristic vision. Some of these amazing music tracks include:
- HYAENA: The opening track of the album sets the tone with a dark and ominous beat that features distorted vocals from Scott and eerie chants from KayCyy.
- MELTDOWN: A collaboration with Drake that serves as a sequel to their 2018 hit "Sicko Mode". The song switches between three different beats and showcases both rappers' lyrical prowess and charisma.
- DELRESTO (ECHOES): A surprise duet with Beyoncé that samples Pink Floyd's classic song "Echoes". The song blends Scott's auto-tuned crooning with Beyoncé's soulful vocals over a dreamy and atmospheric instrumental.
- FE! N: A hard-hitting banger that features Playboi Carti and Sheck Wes. The song is full of ad-libs, catchy hooks, and energetic flows from all three rappers.
- K-POP: A crossover track that features Bad Bunny and The Weeknd. The song mixes elements of trap, reggaeton, and pop music to create a catchy and danceable tune.
- LOST FOREVER: A melancholic and introspective track that features James Blake and Westside Gunn. The song reflects on Scott's fame, fortune, and regrets over a somber piano melody.
"Utopia" is undoubtedly
one of the best albums of 2023 and proves that Travis Scott is one of the most
innovative and influential artists of his generation. He has created a sonic
masterpiece that transcends genres and boundaries and takes listeners on a
journey through his musical utopia.
