The accident happened on the N54 road in Legnakelly, Monaghan, at 6:45 p.m., and An Garda is currently on the scene. One vehicle is still at the scene, claims a statement.

This evening, the Garda confirmed that two female passengers in the car, ages 16 and 17, suffered fatal injuries. Post-mortem examinations will be performed tomorrow at Monaghan General Hospital where both bodies were taken.

According to An Garda: “A male teenager (aged 18 years) is currently receiving treatment in Cavan General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.”

The Journal has information that some of the crash victims were en route to debs this evening. It is believed that all five people involved in the collision were riding in the same car.

Clones to Smithborough Road has been closed, and it is anticipated that it will stay closed through the night. Technical analysis of the scene is being done by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

On Twitter this evening, Cavan-Monaghan Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy described the news as "horrendous, heart-wrenching.".

Carthy also added: “A moment of joy and celebration for these young people has turned into a lifetime of devastation for those who loved them. God help the families affected. The prayers of everyone in County Monaghan is with them.”.

A youth worker wearing a red jumper has been placed on the streets of Clones and Monaghan, according to the Clones Youth Center. This evening, the center will be open until 11:30 pm.
